Chapter 5
Cinderella in the Modern World âą Chapter 7
Chapter 5
Of these four middle-aged women who looked ordinary, three were nannies and one was the mistress of the house.
I could tell the difference at a glance.
Back when my family was doing well, weâd had several nannies too â and theyâd spent their days playing mahjong with my mom just like this.
Iâd guessed Mrs. Lin wanted to help me, but I had no idea what she was planning. Her actions had completely taken me by surprise, and since Iâd never had any schemes against Mrs. Lin, I hadnât bothered to figure out what she was up to.
I shook my head, then nodded again.
Lydia Lin whispered, "Mrs. Fang is a total gossip."
My mouth dropped open in shock. Mrs. Lin must have watched too many palace dramas. In reality, Sam Yates just lacked discipline from his elders. I couldnât see how Mrs. Fang could help in any unexpected way.
"My mom and Mrs. Fang and the others wonât stop playing mahjong until itâs time for a midnight snack. Do you know how to make Cantonese sweet soups? Can you make a few for them as a snack? If not, I can order takeout," Lydia Lin pulled me toward the kitchen.
"No problem â leave it to me. But after we make the snacks, can we go home first? We have to go to work tomorrow," I opened the huge refrigerator in the kitchen and started picking out ingredients.
Lydia Lin agreed immediately. She found it boring to watch a bunch of middle-aged aunts play mahjong and gossip about other peopleâs lives anyway.
As we were leaving the villa, we were stopped by someone weâd hoped to avoid. Sam Yates was in his car, with several heavily made-up women sitting beside him. He stared at me with a dark expression, then snapped at the women without looking back. "Get out of the car â all of you!"
Iâd never expected to run into Sam Yates. I stepped in front of Lydia Lin to protect her. "Mr. Yates!"
"You still remember Iâm Mr. Yates? Do you know I can fire you anytime I want â even Lydia Lin canât save you," Sam Yates said. The heavily made-up women got out of the car, and Sam walked around to my side, reaching out to grab my hand. "Get in the car with me!"
"Sam Yates, donât go too far! Do you think I wonât call your brother?" Lydia Lin grabbed my other hand, trying to stop him from pulling me into the car.
"Youâre not even my sister-in-law yet, and youâre already trying to order me around?" Sam Yates ç©ćŒ Lydia Lin roughly, then dragged me into his BMW 7 Series by force.
So thatâs the real relationship between Lydia Lin and Sam Yates, I thought, my mind racing. "Lydie, go home first. Iâll be back soon. Mr. Yates probably just wants to talk to me!"
It was the middle of the night â there was no way Sam Yates had dragged me into the car just to talk. But I needed to calm Lydia Lin down first.
Sam Yates let out a cold laugh. "Youâre pretty smart. Do you really think I wonât do anything to you?"
"Mr. Yates, are you sure you just want to talk?" I looked at Lydia Lin, who was staring at me in worry. I watched as she fumbled for her phone to make a call, and I knew she was truly concerned about me.
Sam Yates rested one hand on the steering wheel and looked at me ć·çŹ through the rearview mirror. "Jane Cooper, you canât be that naive, can you? Youâve been playing hard to get with me just to get my attention, havenât you?"
"Youâre overthinking it. The truth is, I donât even look down on you â so why would I play hard to get with someone I donât care about?" I calmly brushed a strand of hair out of my face, took out a hair tie, and tied my loose hair into a ponytail.
"Hmph! You still say youâre not playing hard to get? Isnât this exactly your trick?" Sam Yates refused to believe me.
I sighed silently and rolled my eyes. Iâd come to G City to change my life, not to scheme against wealthy second-generation heirs â let alone play hard to get with them. "Youâre too full of yourself. Mr. Yates, if you insist on thinking Iâm playing hard to get, then what if I die with you? Would you still think itâs an act?"
Sam Yates clearly didnât understand what I meant. He sneered. "Would you really be willing to die?"
No, I wouldnât! But I had the courage to risk it. If you want to bring down an emperor, you have to be willing to sacrifice everything. Sam Yates sneered, and I sneered back.
Sam Yates thought I couldnât do anything to him.
When Sam Yates drove to an intersection, I suddenly lunged forward from the back seat, grabbed the steering wheel, and jerked it hard in the opposite direction.
I didnât know how to drive, but I knew how to grab a steering wheel. With my other hand, I reached for the car key â without the key, Sam Yates wouldnât be able to chase after me even if I ran.
"Are you crazy?" Sam Yates was shocked. He reacted quickly and grabbed the steering wheel to regain control.
The car hit the curb, and Iâd already pulled out the key, so it came to a stop by the side of the road. I felt around under the seat and pulled out the emergency hammer. "Sam Yates, youâre way too full of yourself."
Right after that, several luxury cars surrounded us from all directions.
Lydia Lin got out of one of the cars, followed by a middle-aged man and a young man who looked somewhat similar to Sam Yates. Several other people got out of the remaining cars and walked toward Sam Yatesâ BMW 7 Series.
"Looks like your saviors are here," Sam Yatesâ face darkened, and he looked utterly frustrated.
"I have something thatâll make you even more frustrated â just watch!" I messed up my hair, then grabbed my shirt and pulled hard. Two buttons popped off.
"Fuck!" Sam Yates stared at me in shock. "You still say youâre not playing hard to get?"
Of course Iâm not! I opened the car door, stepped out, and threw the car key I was holding onto the ground. With one hand, I pulled my shirt tight to cover my chest. With the other, I gave Lydia Lin a smile. "Iâm okay."
"This is âokayâ?" Lydia Lin hugged me, then turned to the young man, her teeth clenched. "Victor Yates, look what your brother did!"
Victor Yates walked over to Sam Yates with a cold expression. "Youâre getting more and more audacious!"
Under the strange gazes of everyone around, Sam Yates swallowed nervously and looked at the middle-aged man. "If I say I didnât do anything, would you believe me?"
"You just didnât have time to finish, right?" The middle-aged man took off his suit jacket and told Lydia Lin to cover me with it. His face was also grim. "I overestimated you!"
"Thank you. Actually⊠itâs nothing serious. I was just too nervous and fought with Mr. Yates over the steering wheel. Iâm sorry â I didnât think about the consequences," I apologized, bowing slightly to everyone around me.
Lydia Lin quickly draped the middle-aged manâs suit over my shoulders. "How could you be so reckless? What if something bad had happened?"
"But nothing did, right?" I noticed several scrapes on Lydia Linâs arm. I reached out and gently hugged her back.
