Chapter 7
"Hello, police station? I want to report a crime."
Half a month earlier, Daniel had filed a formal report against Maggie Jiang, accusing her of illegal fundraising, money laundering, gang-related activities, and other crimes.
Maggie had incited someone to harm my mother, but that person had refused to implicate her.
The doctor had warned that I couldn't handle any more shock—if I lost the baby, my health would collapse too.
Daniel had gone to great lengths to suppress the news, then started gathering evidence of Maggie's crimes to avenge my mother.
He never expected Maggie to choose to burn everything down with her—even in her final moments, she wanted to make me suffer too.
Once the investigation was over, Maggie was arrested and formally charged.
She admitted to all her crimes but refused to hire a defense lawyer or see anyone who came to visit her. The only thing she asked for was to see me.
I'd just gotten out of confinement, and my body was still weak from giving birth. Daniel didn't want me to go, but I insisted.
Maggie had cut her hair short and had no makeup on—but she still looked beautiful.
For a moment, I was reminded of her in college—ambitious, confident, and lively.
When she saw me, a playful smile tugged at the corner of her eyes.
"Eva White, I've never lost before. Anything I wanted, people would always hand it to me on a silver platter. But Daniel Song... he made me lose completely. And to think—I lost to you of all people," she said.
"We only have ten minutes. What do you really want to say?" I asked.
Maggie told me about how Daniel had been enduring hardships all these years. He'd drunk so much at business dinners that he'd gotten stomach bleeding. He'd finally waited for his company to go public, but as a young entrepreneur trying to take a share of the market, many people had been eyeing him greedily. Over the past two years, he'd received countless death threats.
Someone had tampered with his car's brakes. Someone had put a bomb in his office drawer. Someone had even crashed into his car on purpose.
Maggie said that during the six months I'd been waiting for the property division, Daniel had been living in constant danger. The worst incident had been when his car had flipped over a cliff dozens of meters high. He'd been missing for a long time, and when they found him, he'd barely been alive. The first thing he did when he regained consciousness was call me to discuss the divorce.
Maggie had violated the rules by secretly helping Daniel avoid many fatal "accidents." Because of this, her company had planned to abandon her. Her loyal subordinates, desperate to protect her position, had taken matters into their own hands and harmed my mother.
"He didn't even dare to go home, afraid that he'd get you involved. That day, I finally managed to get him drunk—so drunk he could barely stand. But all he kept saying was 'Eva,'" Maggie said.
"His secretary asked him where he wanted to go. He was drunk, and I'd never seen him so agitated before. He just kept saying he wanted to go home, that he wanted Eva..."
"And that 'property division' that took half a year? He was just waiting until he'd gotten rid of all those threats before he dared to ask you to come back. Eva White—he loves you. He loves you so much."
Maggie started crying. It was the first time I'd ever seen her cry. She let the tears stream down her face, still forcing a smile. "All these years, I've been watching him. It's a shame—we were never meant to walk the same path... I'm sorry, Eva White. I really am."
Now that the truth was out, I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out.
"Time's up," the prison guard said, leading Maggie away.
I stood up like a zombie and walked out.
Daniel was waiting for me outside.
The wind was strong. When he saw me, he hurried over, took a shawl out of his bag, and wrapped it around me. He held my hands, checking that I was warm enough, before letting out a sigh of relief.
But when he saw how distracted I was, he frowned in concern. "What's wrong?" he asked.
I looked at Daniel—his eyes filled with nothing but me—and said nothing. Tears suddenly poured down my face.
I threw myself into Daniel's arms, clinging to him tightly as I sobbed uncontrollably.
