Chapter 6

My Unlucky Amnesiac Husband   â€˘   Chapter 8

Chapter 6

I went to work as usual. We talked on the phone every day, and even when he was busy, he'd make time to video call me at night. On the third day of Alex's trip, I dropped another glass while getting water. Then, while cleaning up the dishes, I cut my hand. That uneasy feeling I'd had before he left came back.

When I sat back down at my desk, a news alert popped up on my phone: a hotel in K City—where Alex was staying—had caught fire. The fire had been put out, but there were casualties. A terrible feeling washed over me. I forced myself to read the hotel's name—and my legs gave out. It was the hotel Alex was staying at.

My colleagues noticed something was wrong and rushed over to help me. I burst into tears. Alex had just recovered from his accident—now he had to go through this again?

"I need to go find him—I have to go," I sobbed, completely panicking. All I could think about was seeing him right away. My colleagues comforted me and helped me book a flight to K City.

By the time I got to K City, it was evening. I tried calling Alex, but his phone was off. I called his assistant, who told me which hospital Alex was in. I rushed to the hospital—and there, in Alex's room, I saw a familiar figure: Jenny Yuan. I had no idea when she'd arrived. When she saw me come in, she just gave me a cold glance and kept sitting next to Alex's bed.

I asked the doctor about Alex's condition. He said Alex had been knocked down in the crowd while escaping the fire, but his condition was stable—we just had to wait for him to wake up. I felt a little relieved and went back to Alex's room. Jenny Yuan was sitting by the bed, wiping Alex's hands.

Anger flared up inside me. Before I could say anything, Jenny spoke first. "I can take care of Alex. You being here will only upset him—you might as well leave."

"I'm his wife," I said. "What right do you have to be here? His ex-girlfriend? The one who left him?" I glared at her. "He's married now—you calling him 'Alex' like that isn't appropriate."

"I didn't say anything about you in front of his parents because I respect Alex and didn't want to cause a scene," I continued. "But that doesn't mean I'll let you keep pestering him. And it doesn't mean I won't fight back."

I'd put up with Jenny for long enough, always thinking, "You don't bother me, and I won't bother you." But now she was openly provoking me—I wasn't going to just take it anymore.

Jenny had no reply. She just glared at me angrily. "I only left him because of a misunderstanding," she said finally. "When I saw you two were married, I didn't want to interfere. But now he doesn't remember you." She sneered. "You're just his wife in name. That doesn't mean you'll keep that title forever. We'll see who wins in the end." With that, she walked past me and left.

As I watched her go, I thought back to when I first met Alex. He'd been even quieter back then, trapped in his pain over Jenny Yuan. During the day, he'd been careful and cautious at work—afraid of making a mistake in front of the company's seniors. At night, he'd either work or get drunk. He'd looked so worn out. It had taken him a long time to get over that relationship and open up again. I'd watched him struggle through that hard time—and I wasn't going to let Jenny Yuan hurt him again.

That night, I was so tired I fell asleep leaning against Alex's hospital bed. When I woke up the next morning, I was lying in the hospital bed, and Alex was sitting in a chair next to me, smiling softly as he looked at me. When he saw I was awake, he stood up right away. "How could you run all the way here without thinking about your health?" he said, his voice gentle.

I struggled to sit up. "I was worried about you—I just wanted to see you right away." Alex sat down on the edge of the bed and hugged me tightly. "Lisa, I'm sorry," he said. "I'm so sorry you had to go through all this alone these past few months." I could feel him trembling as he held me.

"Y-you remember now?" I asked, 不敢相信 my ears.

"Yes," he said, pulling back to look at me. He gently held my face in his hands. His eyes were filled with the familiar warmth and passion I'd missed so much.

"You finally remember!" I sobbed, throwing my arms around him. "Do you have any idea how hard these past few months have been? Your ex-girlfriend was living in your parents' house, staying with you. And you—you even said you'd never like someone like me!" I yelled through my tears, letting out all the 委屈 I'd bottled up.

"Shhh, don't cry," Alex said, patting my back gently. "Getting upset isn't good for the baby." Just then, the doctor walked in for his rounds. "Congratulations—you're awake!" he said to Alex. "The impact from the fire actually helped dissolve the blood clots in your brain. It's like a blessing in disguise!" After checking Alex, the doctor said he was fine and could be discharged soon.

Alex hadn't finished his work in K City, so I took time off to stay with him. During the day, he worked on the project; at night, he stayed by my side. "I'm sorry I ruined our anniversary," he said one night, taking off his glasses and leaning against me. "Can we make it up with a trip later?"

"Okay," I said, pretending to be angry. "I want to make up for all the 委屈 I've been through."

"Of course," Alex said, smiling as he ruffled my hair. "It's all my fault. I'll make it up to you—anything you want."
