Chapter 13

On the way to the hospital, Linda Brown’s water broke. As soon as they arrived, the doctors arranged for a natural delivery. Even though it was still weeks before her due date, the baby was unusually large—and the delivery turned into a difficult one.

Mom was superstitious and insisted natural childbirth made babies smarter. Linda Brown labored all night, and in the end, she needed an episiotomy to give birth to an 8-pound baby girl.

Mom had called Ryan Wilson countless times that night, but he never showed up.

The person I’d hired to monitor him sent me a message: “He booked a private room at a KTV and hired hostesses. I took some photos and sent them to your email.”

“Is he still there? Later, pretend to be following him, let him catch you, and act natural,” I replied.

“Why?” the monitor asked.

“I have my reasons. Just do as I say,” I said.

“After he catches you, find a way to tell him the person who hired you has the last name Li,” I added.

“Got it.”

I was framing Linda Brown—making Ryan think she’d hired someone to spy on him. Sure enough, Ryan grew disgusted with her.

The next morning, he finally went to the hospital—but he only glanced at his daughter before leaving for the company. He didn’t even go to the ward to see Linda Brown.

“Mom, haven’t you heard from Ryan yet? Did something happen to him? He still hasn’t come to the hospital,” Linda Brown asked weakly from her hospital bed. She’d been exhausted after laboring all night.

“Tsk tsk—don’t say such unlucky things,” Mom chided.

“He probably drank too much at a business dinner last night and is still sleeping at home,” she added.

“Mom, go home and check on him. When he wakes up, tell him to come here right away,” Linda Brown begged.

“Can you stay here alone? Should we call your family to come over?” Mom asked.

A look of disappointment flashed in Linda Brown’s eyes. She’d already told her family she was in the hospital when she arrived the night before—if they’d wanted to come, they would have been there by now.

“No, it’s fine. I’ll call the nurse if I need anything,” she said.
