Chapter 3

Rejecting My Boyfriend's Belated Affection   â€˘   Chapter 5

Chapter 3

I lay there, waiting for them to put on a show for me.

They'd finished talking about work, run out of small talk, and still, Olivia didn't leave.

"You've been sitting by Xiao Ning's side all night again, haven't you? Look at you—your dark circles are terrible," she said.

"You need to rest. What if you wear yourself out? Don't worry about work—I'll handle as much as I can for you."

I could just picture her now—those big, dewy eyes fixed on my boyfriend, her hand resting on his shoulder, her smile bright as she inched closer to him.

Just like the way she'd looked when I'd gone to his office that time.

And here I was, lying motionless.

I couldn't even open my eyes.

If they'd kissed right then and there, I wouldn't have been able to do a thing about it.

Olivia Parker and Ethan Carter had always been in the same world.

Same major, same hobbies, same office. I could list a hundred things they had in common. Sometimes, even I thought they were a match made in heaven.

Between Ethan and me, all we had left were the memories of our love and seven years of companionship. Everything else was gone.

Ethan Carter—are you waiting for me to break up with you?

Too cowardly to be the one to cheat, so you want me to be the one to walk away?

If that's how cruel you are...

"Thank you," Ethan said, his voice hoarse with exhaustion.

"If there's nothing else, you should go back now."

Was he... telling Olivia to leave?

"Oh, okay," Olivia sounded surprised. Then she added, "I'm so sorry..."

"This is all my fault. If I hadn't caused this, Xiao Ning wouldn't have argued with you, and none of this would have happened."

"If something happens to her, I—"

I was going to throw up. Seriously, lady?

"When Xiao Ning wakes up, I'll come and apologize to her in person. From now on, I'll be more careful. I won't make her angry anymore," she said.

Translation: I'll try even harder to make her so angry she drops dead.

Ethan's tone was neutral as he replied, "We've always argued. This isn't your fault."

"But she really doesn't like it when I'm with you. So from now on, we should keep our distance."

I'd argued with Ethan about this for almost six months.

And now, here I was, lying in the ICU after a car accident, fighting for my life, and finally—finally—he was willing to say that to Olivia Parker.
