Chapter 17
Linda Brown insisted on keeping custody of the baby, but the Wilson family showed her no mercy. We took her to court. According to the law, marital property would be split equally—including half of Ryan’s salary from his job during their few months of marriage. But we also filed a lawsuit to recover all the large, unreasonable transfers Ryan had made to Linda since they’d started dating (excluding small, symbolic gifts like red envelopes for holidays).
I sold all the designer bags, jewelry, and cosmetics Linda had gotten from Ryan on a secondhand app. We also started the process of taking back the apartment Ryan had bought for Linda’s brother as part of her bride price.
While Linda was fighting the divorce lawsuit with the Wilson family, her own family turned their backs on her after losing the apartment. Her parents even blamed her for ruining her brother’s life.
In the end, the court ruled that Linda Brown owed the Wilson family 1.3 million yuan (from the recovered transfers).
“We’ll waive the 1.3 million if you give up custody of the baby right now,” we told her.
