It was a woman—and they were walking toward me.
"Sophia, hurry and let us in."
As they got closer, I saw Luna’s pale face, her eyes closed, her body trembling. Inside, Ethan carried Luna to our bedroom, piling several quilts on top of her. Watching his clumsy attempts to help, I stepped forward.
I told the housekeeper to fill the bathtub with hot water and found a change of clothes. Together, we helped Luna into the tub. Ethan paced outside, clearly anxious.
By the time we finished, Luna had woken up. She froze when she saw me.
"Where am I?"
"Ethan Wilson’s house," I replied. "Since you’re awake, stay in the tub a little longer to warm up."
I turned to leave, but Luna called after me. "Thank you."
"It’s nothing." Then, unthinkingly, I added, "Today’s my birthday—but I guess it’s ruined now."
Instantly, I regretted the words.
"Sister Xiaoxue, I’m so sorry—I didn’t mean to!" Luna cried. "Today, my ex-husband found where I live. He came asking for money, and when I refused, he grabbed my hair and hit me. I had no choice but to jump into the river when he wasn’t looking..."
