Sophia Miller’s eyes turned red instantly. She nodded. “I do.”

“How long have you known him?”

“For a long time.”

“So you deliberately introduced him to me?”

“Yes!”

“Why?”

“Because of Luke Brown!”

I froze. This was the last answer I wanted to hear.

“Do you… like Luke Brown?”

“Yes. I’ve liked him for years. And I’ve watched him like you for years too. Lucy White, you can’t keep being so selfish forever. We’ve all played along with this charade for long enough. It’s time for you to wake up.”

I shook my head in panic. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t want to hear it. Get out! Get out!”

I struggled to get up, trying to drive her away, but Sophia Miller pulled a stack of photos out of her bag and slammed them onto the table.

In the scattered photos, I saw myself—looking ferocious and crazy.

And I saw Luke Brown, awkwardly taking care of me, his face filled with anxiety.

“Tyler King’s sister was just like you—devastated by that scumbag, so desperate she wanted to die. But Tyler King was abroad, and he didn’t know who had hurt Lily King.”

“Luke Brown wanted to learn how to take care of someone with mental illness, so he asked Benjamin Taylor for help. Tyler King found out about this and assumed Luke Brown was the one who’d hurt his sister.”

“When Ethan Green showed up, I was actually happy. I thought that if you fell in love with Ethan Green, maybe I could finally win Luke Brown over.”

“I never expected that Ethan Green would be Daniel Green’s half-brother. But then again, they do look a bit alike. But if I didn’t realize it, how could Luke Brown not have?”

“Lucy White, do you know how painful it is to push the woman you love into another man’s arms?”

“Luke Brown watched the girl he’d taken care of for so long smile at another man. I asked him, ‘Does it hurt?’ Guess what he said?”

“He said, ‘Lucy White hurts more.’”
