Chapter 5

Like right now. I was telling Ethan how to cook when his phone rang. The caller ID read "Luna Parker." I waited, curious to see how he’d handle it.

To my surprise, he picked up and hung up immediately.

"Aren’t you going to answer?" I asked, feigning surprise.

He set the phone down, dismissive. "It’s probably just some trivial matter."

A moment later, the phone rang again. Ethan frowned, looking annoyed. When he reached to hang up again, I stopped him.

"Answer it—what if it’s an emergency?"

Ethan glanced at me, hesitated, then answered. I couldn’t hear what the other person was saying, but Ethan’s response was clear.

"You can handle it yourself. I’m busy today—stop calling." He hung up.

"Sophia," he said softly, almost coquettishly. "Today, I’m all yours."

I couldn’t help but smile. Ethan Wilson—don’t let me down this time. I don’t have time to waste on you anymore...

On my birthday, I finished work early. When I got home, Ethan had cooked a table of food and gone to pick up the cake we’d ordered. It felt like we were back to the days when we were in love.

But could I really trust Ethan again?

By midnight, Ethan still hadn’t returned. I called his phone—only to hear it was turned off. What if something had happened to him? Panicked, I grabbed my car keys to go look for him.

But as I opened the door, I saw Ethan standing outside. Under the dim streetlight, he was carrying a small, limp figure in his arms.
