Chapter 4

There's two million yuan here. The password is the first six digits of the card number. Now, can you give me the household registration book?

My parents took the bank card with delight. My dad said: We'll go to the bank to check first, then we'll give it to you.

Ryan Bennett watched them leave with a cold look in his eyes. I sat with him in the living room, and I asked him timidly: Did you prepare that card in advance?

He nodded. He had probably investigated my family beforehand. At the time, I didn't think anything was wrong—I was even touched.

He knew about my background, he knew what my parents were like, he knew about my past, and yet he still wanted to marry me.

I was even more convinced that he truly loved me.

In the afternoon, my parents came back. Their attitude had done a complete 180—they handed over the household registration book and were polite to Ryan Bennett. But Ryan Bennett was still cold to them, even a little disgusted.

As we left, I sat in the passenger seat and said to him: Before we get married, I want to change my name.

"盼弟" (Pan Di)—I really hated that name.

What do you want to be called?

I thought for a moment: I don't know yet. I haven't thought about it.

He glanced at me: How about Ella Carter? I can call you Ella.

Up until then, he had always spoken to me in a flat tone, but when he said "Ella," his voice softened a lot.

It seemed like he liked that name. I nodded: Sure, that's nice.

Later, I found out that Sophia Wilson's nickname was Ella. No wonder he had said it so nicely and naturally.

I changed my name and got a marriage certificate with him, but we didn't have a wedding—only took wedding photos.

He said marriage was a matter between the two of us, and there was no need to make it so tiring.

In the wedding photos, the look in his eyes as he looked at me was incredibly gentle—as if he were looking at his most precious treasure.

In reality, though, he was just looking at Sophia Wilson in a wedding dress through me.

After marrying into his family, I found out that he was not only a professor but also a businessman. His family had a lot of assets—he was truly a wealthy, handsome, and accomplished man.

After his mother passed away, his father lost interest in managing the family business. Instead, he built a house next to his wife's tomb and said he wanted to spend his remaining years there.

I envied the love between his parents and thought Ryan Bennett must also be a devoted man.

As for my parents back home, once they found out I had married into a wealthy family, they sent me messages asking for money every now and then. They even threatened to go to Ryan Bennett for money if I refused.

I didn't want them to bother Ryan Bennett, so I went out and found a job as a receptionist, earning three thousand five hundred yuan a month.

Every month, as soon as I got my salary, I sent all of it back home. Ryan Bennett didn't interfere much with me—he let me do whatever I wanted.

But he was always cold to me, which made me feel uncomfortable. It was like I wasn't his wife, but just a guest staying in his house.

In daily life, I was afraid of making him unhappy, so I tried to please him in every way—taking care of him meticulously and asking after his well-being.

But his attitude towards me never changed. I comforted myself, thinking: Maybe that's just his personality. As long as I do my duty as a wife, everything will be okay.

A scream pulled me back to reality: Ah! There's a dead person! A dead person!

Not far away, an aunt walked over from the other end of the alley. When she saw my body lying on the ground, covered in blood, she screamed and ran away.

Soon after, the police arrived. Finally, my body had been found.

A policeman knelt down beside me, checked my pulse and heartbeat, and said urgently to the others behind him:

She's still breathing! Hurry, call an ambulance! Hurry!

Huh? I wasn't dead? No wonder Black and White Impermanence hadn't come to claim my soul. I couldn't help but admire my own will to live—I had survived like this all night. That was really something.

When the ambulance arrived, I watched as the doctors treated my wounds. On the other side, the police were trying to contact my family.
