Chapter 7

Ryan Bennett stayed by my side the whole time. I didn't want to look at him, so I drifted out of the room and wandered around the hospital.

As I passed by an operating room, I saw Black and White Impermanence waiting at the door. They looked exactly like the legends described.

Looking at them made me a little scared. I wanted to leave quickly, but they spotted me anyway.

Hey, ghost! Come over here.

I looked around. The Black Impermanence waved at me: Don't look around—we're talking to you. Come here.

Helpless, I drifted over to them. The White Impermanence asked: What's your name and date of birth? Tell us all the details.

I replied respectfully: Ella Carter. I was born on April 15, 1999. I can't remember the exact time.

The White Impermanence flipped through a book and muttered my name under his breath: Ella Carter... Ella Carter... Found you.

Oh my goodness! Girl, your lifespan isn't up yet. Why is your soul wandering around like this?

I replied timidly: I've become a vegetable.

Oh~ That explains it. The Black Impermanence said. You need to get back to your body right away. Once your soul returns, your body will wake up naturally.

Don't wander around anymore, or the consequences will be serious.

I continued to ask: How serious?

The White Impermanence looked at me seriously and said: For someone like you—who's a vegetable but whose soul has left the body—if your soul doesn't return to your body within a month, you'll really die. We're not joking with you.

I nodded. Black and White Impermanence waved at me: Hurry back now.

Even though I had agreed to them, I really had no desire to live.

There was no one in this world who cared about me, and no one I cared about either. It would be better to die and start over. In my next life, things couldn't be this bad, could they?

Afraid that Black and White Impermanence would force me back into my body, I drifted back to the ward obediently.

Ryan Bennett was holding my hand and scrolling through the chat history between me and my parents. His face grew darker and darker.

I didn't bother to care about him. I sat by the window and looked at the bright lights outside, letting out a sigh.

All my life, no one had ever left a light on for me, and no one had ever waited for me to come home.

Ryan Bennett left early the next morning. He looked gloomy and terrifying. I was a little curious—where was he going?

I drifted along beside him. He called six burly men and led them in a convoy straight back to the county seat where my hometown was.

Was he going to see my parents? Ryan Bennett arrived at the apartment he had bought for my brother and knocked on the door.

When my mom opened the door and saw the crowd of big men and Ryan Bennett leading them, she put on a fake smile and said: Oh, it's Ryan Chen! What brings you here?

Ryan Bennett pushed past my mom and walked into the house. My brother was sitting on the sofa with his legs crossed, watching TV.

He had his arm around a girl with tattoos and revealing clothes.

That must have been my brother's girlfriend. My brother glanced at Ryan Bennett but didn't pay him any attention.

The girl, though, stole several glances at Ryan Bennett.

Ryan Bennett looked around the apartment and said: I'll give you three days to move out.

What? My mom panicked. The apartment is in my son's name! What right do you have to tell us to move?

My brother also stood up from the sofa and pointed at Ryan Bennett: Who do you think you are? We'll move just because you say so? I'm the owner of this apartment!

Without saying a word, one of the burly men walked over and pinned my brother down on the sofa. My brother screamed in pain.

The girl was also scared and stepped back to the side. When my mom saw her son screaming, she was filled with 心疼.

What do you think you're doing? Do you think we won't call the police?

Ryan Bennett still had that cold, indifferent attitude: If you haven't moved out in three days, we'll see each other in court.

With that, he led the men and left.
