Chapter 4

That night, I lay beside Grandpa, listening to his snoring. I stared at the clock on the wall until it struck midnight.

It was now May 24th. I glanced at Grandpa, and a huge weight lifted off my chest.

I thought carefully about those memories—all the endless, miserable days and nights.

That night, I made a decision: I would find my biological parents. I needed to confirm if they really existed.

The next morning, I didn’t go to school. I told Grandpa that I’d dreamed of my birth parents the night before, and I could clearly remember their address and names.

Grandpa was confused, but he chose to believe me and decided to go with me to find them.

In my past memories, after I returned to the Wilson family, my mom had told me about my childhood—where and when I’d gotten lost, and little details about me as a kid. I wrote all that information down on a piece of paper.

I prepared a transparent sealed bag, pulled out a few strands of my hair, put them inside, and then placed the bag and the paper into an envelope.

I even tried to dress like I had when I got lost as a child.

Grandpa put on his nicest clothes and took all the savings he had at home.

We took a train to City S. When we got off, we went straight to the address I remembered from my memories.

I’d thought we’d have to wait a long time, but by coincidence, we ran into my biological mother as she was coming out.

I recognized her familiar face right away. In my past life, when I was bedridden and paralyzed, she’d taken care of me day and night.

I walked up to her and greeted her politely.

“Excuse me, are you Ms. Fiona Wilson?”

Fiona Wilson looked at me, and her eyes widened in shock.

“Who are you? Do we know each other?” she asked.

“My name is Nina Miller. I think I might be your daughter,” I said.

She stared at my face—so similar to Ryan Wilson’s—and gasped. “Nina? Is that really you, Nina? Your dad and I have been looking for you for so long!”

She suddenly rushed over and grabbed my hands, her eyes earnest.

I pulled my hands away, handed her the envelope I’d prepared.

“This has my information and some of my hair. You can do a paternity test if you want,” I said. “There’s also my contact information inside. I’m an orphan, actually—I just dreamed about you and your husband by chance. I’m not even sure if I’m your daughter.”

“Okay, I’ll go get the test done right away, Nina. Come home with me first!” she urged.

“Thank you for your kindness, Auntie, but this is my first time in City S as an adult. I plan to look around with Grandpa first. Please contact me once you have the test results,” I replied.

We stood there in a stalemate for a while—Fiona Wilson was reluctant to let me go.

“Ms. Fiona Wilson, Nina’s legal guardian is me right now, and we have things to do,” Grandpa said firmly. “We’ll wait for your call after the paternity test results come out.”

With that, Grandpa took my hand and walked away.

Fiona Wilson watched us leave until our figures disappeared. Her legs gave way, and she sat down on a stone bench, then pulled out her phone and called David Wilson.
