Chapter 12
Mom was afraid something would happen to the baby, so she tried to comfort Linda Brown on the way to the hospital.
“Don’t worry, honey—I’ll make sure justice is done for you,” she promised. She said she’d stand up for Linda Brown and wouldn’t let Ryan Wilson off easily.
After comforting her for a while, Mom sighed and changed the subject.
“My son was totally in the wrong for what he did, but you shouldn’t take your anger out on Nina,” she said. “Nina is still young—she doesn’t understand these things. As her sister-in-law, you should be more tolerant of her. Don’t fight with her over this.”
Linda Brown’s forehead was covered in cold sweat from the pain. “Mom, Nina Wilson is the same age as me,” she gasped.
Everyone in the car fell silent, as if by unspoken agreement.
Mom’s words cut like a knife into Linda Brown’s heart.
Linda Brown’s family favored boys over girls. Ever since her younger brother was born, her mom had always told her, “You’re the older sister—your brother is still little. You have to let him have his way.”
Even the bride price from her marriage to Ryan had been used to buy her brother an apartment. Her family hadn’t given her any dowry, but Mom hadn’t complained, knowing about their financial situation.
Before they got married, Ryan had spent a lot of money on Linda. In the few months since she’d married into our family, she’d also sent money back to her parents every month.
Her family used to run a small breakfast shop, but they’d sold it not long ago. Now the whole family relied on Linda to support them.
